Ford Mustang II Cobra II

The Ford Mustang II was the second-generation of the pony car and was manufactured by Ford from 1973 to 1978. It made its showroom debut in September 1973, available as either a coupe or hatchback, as the global oil crisis had taken hold. Unlike the previous-generation Mustang, the Mustang II had no common components.

Background

The Ford Mustang had grown in size since its introduction and during the early 1970s, buyers were seeking more fuel-efficient vehicles such as Ford's own Maverick. This was unfolding as Ford Motor Company president Lee Iacocca ordered the development of a smaller Mustang for the 1974 model year. The decision was made to base the Mustang II on the Ford Pinto subcompact, rather than the Ford Maverick compact.

Ford designers came up with a small car design reminiscent of the original Mustang. Dick Nesbitt finalized the Mustang II design in 1971, and while it had a similar look to the original Ford Mustang, it had less in common with the Pinto than the original Mustang had with the Falcon.
