Ford Mustang II King Cobra

The Ford Mustang II was a second-generation pony car produced by Ford from 1973 until 1978. Its release came at a time of great change for the automotive industry - the 1973 oil crisis resulted in a move towards smaller, less extravagant cars. Ford responded to this trend by presenting the Mustang II, which was unlike the first generation Mustang in both design and size, being based on the subcompact-sized Ford Pinto. Background Lee Iacocca, appointed president of Ford Motor Company in December 1970, had ordered development of the smaller Mustang to begin, and succeeded in bringing it to the showroom for the 1974 model year. Initial plans included basing the Mustang on the Ford Maverick, a compact car, but these were later replaced with plans for a smaller model based on the Pinto. Dick Nesbitt finalized the Mustang II's design in 1971; while the model was based on the Pinto, it was "less of a Pinto than the '64½ had been a Falcon." The Mustang II was created to evoke the allure of the original model, its trim size and concept.
