Ford Mustang K-Code

The 1964½ Mustang was the first Mustang produced and was offered alongside other Ford Falcons and Mercury Comets. It came with a "U-code" 170 cu in (2.8 L) straight-6 engine, paired with a three-speed manual transmission and basic standard features such as black front seat belts, a glove box light, and a padded dash board. When the 'normal' 1965 production began five months after the Mustang debut, many changes were made. This batch of Mustangs is known as the "late 65's," which came after a factory re-tooling in August 1964. The engine lineup was changed to include the new 200 cu in (3.3 L) "T-code" engine, which produced 120 hp (89 kW; 122 PS). Additionally, the 200 hp (150 kW) "C-code" 289 cu in (4.7 L) engine became available, with an "A-code" 225 hp (168 kW; 228 PS) version and the "Hi-Po" "K-code" 271 hp (202 kW; 275 PS) 289 following. These cars also featured an AC alternator rather than a DC electrical generator, as well as reverse lights, which were an optional feature added to the car from August 1964 production. A GT version was also offered, which included a V8 engine (most commonly the 225 hp (168 kW; 228 PS) 289) and other features such as grille-mounted fog lamps, rocker panel stripes, and disc brakes. The Mustang was originally launched as a hardtop or convertible, but the fastback body soon became available as well, including the popular Shelby Mustang.
