Ford Mustang Mach 1

The Ford Mustang Mach 1 experienced some slight changes for 1972, most notably with the removal of the Boss 351 edition and optional 429 big block engines due to tightening emissions regulations. This left only the 351 cu in (5.8 L) variants. Exterior differences were largely unchanged from the previous year, with the addition of "Fasten Seat Belt" warning lamps on the right side dash panel and the "Decor Group" exterior trim package, which allowed for dual tone lower body paint and the honeycomb sportlamp grille from the Mach 1/Boss 351 and the Mach 1's urethane bumper. In March-June 1972, a special Olympic Sprint Edition of the Mach 1 was released, coming in Hardtop and Sportsroof variants with white paint and light blue accents, plus USA shield decals on the rear quarter panels. An extra 50 Sprint convertibles were made for the 1972 National Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington D.C. At mid-year, Ford began offering a slightly detuned Boss 351 engine that could be ordered with any Mustang model. However, only 398 Mustangs were built with the drag race R code motor, designated as the 351 HO. Required options included the top loader 4 speed, competition N case rear end (427, 428, 429, Boss 351, 351HO), and air conditioning delete. Unlike the vacuum operated Ram Air, the 351 HO featured the first full time cold air induction system on a Mustang, routing cold air through a two-piece plastic duct under the battery tray to the air cleaner snorkel. All 351 HO cars were solely manufactured in Dearborn, MI.
