Ford Mustang Miller

The 1979 Ford Mustang was based on the larger Fox platform originally designed for the Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr and offered more interior space for four passengers, a larger trunk, and an increased engine bay. Available body styles were a coupe (notchback) and hatchback (fastback). The only trim level available was Ghia, with an optional Cobra appearance package featuring black lower bodyside paint, colored pinstripes in the wraps around moldings and bumper grooves, plus a snake decal on the hood and Cobra lettering on the doors. This was the first year power door locks and speed control were options on the Mustang while power windows and tilt steering wheel had already been available since 1973.

The Mustang was powered by an 88 hp (66 kW) 2.3 L Pinto inline-four, a 109 hp (81 kW) 2.8 L Cologne V6 (made by Ford of Germany), and a 140 hp (104 kW) 302 cu in (4.9 L) Windsor V8; marketed as a 5.0 L engine and front fenders badged as such. Due to inadequate supplies of the 2.8 L V6, it was replaced later in the year with the 85 hp (63 kW) 3.3 L straight-six. A powerful, new 132 hp (98 kW) 2.3 L turbo four-cylinder engine was also introduced as an alternative to the V8. The 2.3 and 2.3 Turbo, as well as the V8 models, could be optioned with the TRX handling suspension package featuring Michelin 390 mm tires and special metric wheels.
