Ford Mustang SVO 1984 posters

Ford Mustang SVO

Introduced in 1984, the Mustang SVO was Ford's answer to the European and Japanese compact sports coupes of the day. Developed under Ford's new SVO division, this Mustang featured a unique 2.3 L OHV 4-cylinder engine with a computer-controlled fuel injection system and intercooled turbocharger. This powerful engine produced 175 horsepower in its early iterations, and up to 205 hp and 245 ft·lbf of torque in 85'. It also included a Hurst shifter and specialized pedals for "heel and toe" shifting. An additional interior switch allowed drivers to choose the grade of fuel for different power outputs. A competition package was available that removed certain elements to scale back the car's weight. Though far more advanced than the Mustang GT, the SVO was just not popular due to its high price tag of $16,000 USD. By expensive comparison to the GT's V8 engine, the SVO just wasn't attractive enough to Mustang enthusiasts. By 1986, Ford had discontinued the SVO model, only to bring back the V8-powered Mustang GT for 87' with 225 hp. This iteration lacked the more advanced suspension of the SVO along with its other features and 4-wheel disc brakes.
