Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible
The 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible was released in the spring of 2002, featuring a superbly powerful supercharged, 32-valve DOHC, 4.6-liter V8 engine. With an output rating of 390 hp (291 kW) and 390 lb·ft (530 N·m) of torque, in reality the output was closer to 430 hp (321 kW) and 425 lb·ft (576 N·m) of torque. Nicknamed "Terminator" by the SVT development team, various upgrades were made to the powertrain to safely handle this impressive increase in power compared to the previous model's set-up. The engine featured a cast-iron block with stronger internals, and was drove by an 8 psi (0.55 bar) Eaton M-112 roots-type supercharger. The system was connected to a lightweight aluminum flywheel and coupled with a Tremec T-56 six-speed transmission and a 3.55:1 rear axle ratio, along with stronger 31-spline halfshafts and revised upper and lower control arms. The Cobra clocked 0-60 mph in a speedy 4.5 seconds and did the quarter mile in a neat 12.67 seconds at 110.11 mph, while its top speed was electronically-governed to 155 mph; however, with the governor removed, a factory-stock Terminator Cobra can reach a top speed of just underneath 180 mph.
To further up the visual ante, the chief designer of the 2005-2006 Ford GT supercar, Camilo Pardo, made enhancements to the exterior of the Cobra. These included a new front fascia with an integrated spoiler and front brake air ducts, a new rear fascia with a black insert which visually integrated the exhaust pipes, a composite hood with dual functional air scoops, redesigned side scoops with smooth body lines, and foldable sideview mirrors painted in the matching body color. Exclusive to the Cobra, 17" x 9" five-spoke rims were made available in either standard machined-faced aluminum with metallic argent-painted pockets or optional chrome, along with a new decklid spoiler with an integrated LED brake light - an optional feature that could be deleted.
