Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

For 1967, the GT 350 was equipped with the powerful ‘COBRA’ K-Code high performance 289 V8 engine and a new model, the GT 500, was also introduced to the lineup. It featured a Ford "Cobra" V8 (FE Series 428 cu.in.) engine with two four-barrel carburetors sitting on a mid-rise aluminum intake manifold. Although there were plans to introduce a convertible version mid-production year, the idea was shelved due to supply and production problems. In response, Ford took control of engineering and purchasing and A.O Smith was employed to tackle the issues with the fiberglass components and the quality of workmanship. Notable cars for 1967 included the first G.T. 500, the 0100, the only Shelby GT coupe - 0131 (dubbed ‘Little Red’ - which was the precursor to the 1968 California Special) and the only Shelby GT 500 convertible, the 0139. One 1967 Fastback model was modified with a GT-500 engine and was given the nickname "Super Snake". It was equipped with a GT40 racing engine with an impressively powerful 650 horsepower capacity and was capable of reaching speeds of over 150 mph, even demonstrating a top speed of 170 mph with Goodyear's Thunderbolt tires. Unfortunately, despite the power and performance, only the prototype was built due to limited appeal. This car was sold at the Mecum's 2013 Indianapolis auction for a staggering $1.3 million. For 1968, an additional name was added to the models - the Shelby Cobra - and they now marketed as the Shelby Cobra GT 350 and the Shelby Cobra GT 500. The K-code engine was no longer available, so a Hydraulic lifter 230 hp 302 was used instead, producing 250 HP with a high rise intake, but without Shelby headers due to the addition of power steering. Additionally, from April 1968 onwards, Ford started factory-installing the "Cobra Jet" version of the 428 engine (known as the GT 500-KR), which was rated at 335 horsepower with 440 foot-pounds of torque at 3400 RPM. This engine also featured die-cast aluminum valve covers inscribed with “Cobra Lemans”, a nod to Ford’s two victories at Le Mans in 1966 and 1967.
