In 1979, a brand new Ford Mustang was available at dealerships. It was a larger version, based on the "Fox" platform, and was different from the traditional smaller Mustangs. The new car featured a redesigned interior, with increased seating comfort for four people and a bigger trunk with more cargo space. Moreover, the engine bay was improved for improved serviceability. The 2.3 liter four-cylinder was offered in various versions, including a turbo, and, eventually, fuel injection. Along with the four-cylinder, a 200cid inline six was also available and was more easily maintained. Additionally, there was a 3.8-liter "Essex" V6 from 1979 to 1987, and a 255cid V8 offered from 1980 to 1982. The main V8 source was the 302cid (5.0 liter) V8, and it was faster than the 1982 Camaro with the LX package. The Mustang also gained a convertible body in 1983. From 1984 to 1987, a special edition SVO Mustang was available that had styling elements of the main Mustang line, as well as the Indy 500 pace car edition from 1979. Furthermore, these models were sold at a higher price and the 1987 Mustangs had a more aerodynamic look. Ultimately, this Mustang was the longest-running signature vehicle of all time.
