Ford Mustang at SEMA 2004

Production of the 2005 Mustang began on September 7, 2004 at the Flat Rock Assembly plant, with the first models rolling off the line on September 27, 2004. Within the US, its market launch and delivery to customers began at the end of October 2004, before ending production in late 2008 to make way for the 2009 model. Under the hood, the Mustang was fitted with Ford's cast iron 4.0 L Cologne SOHC V6, replacing the posterior 3.8 L Essex OHV V6. This powerplant delivered 210 hp (157 kW) of power at 5300 rpm and 240 lb·ft (325 N·m) of torque at 3500 rpm, paired to either a Tremec T-5 5-speed manual transmission or 5R55S 5-speed automatic as an option. Both transmissions employed a 3.31:1 final drive ratio. To assess its performance against its rival, Pontiac G6 Convertible, Motor Trend magazine staged a comparison test where a Mustang V6 convertible with an automatic shifted from 0 to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in an impressive 7.3 seconds; a whole 1.4 seconds faster than the G6 convertible. The Mustang featured MacPherson-strut front suspension with a reverse "L" lower control arm setup, and a new three-link system with Panhard Rod in the rear for axle control. However, equipping the 5th generation Mustang with a live axle suspension, while reducing cost and weight over independent suspension, received criticism from the automotive journalism community. Ford explained that installing an independent rear suspension would have added an additional $5,000 to the car's base price.
