Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger has been the entry-level pickup truck in North America since the 1983 model year and replaced the Ford Courier. It is a compact pickup truck that is styled after the Ford F-Series, and is available in both two-door and four-door versions. It comes coupled with a 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6, and 4.0L V6 engine, and 5-speed overdrive transmission with the options of manual or automatic. A special FX4 version was also introduced, which featured an 8.8 inch rear axle, 3 skid plates, and Bilstein shocks. Before 1983, the 'Ranger' name was a trim package available on the full-size Ford pickups and had an R1 (for 2-door) and R4 (for 4-door) code in the 5th and 6th position in the VIN. Once the Mazda B-Series pick-up was introduced as a rebadged Ford Ranger in North America in 1993, the collaboration between Mazda, Ford, and Mazda had come full circle. The Ranger is currently manufactured at Ford's Saint Paul, Minnesota Twin Cities Assembly Plant, with an expected end of production in 2008. Previously, it had been constructed in Edison, New Jersey until that plant's closure in 2002. Ford are yet to make an announcement about their plans for a new compact pickup in the future.
