GM HydroGen4 Concept

Nine prominent companies, such as ADAC, Allianz, Coca Cola, Hilton, Linde, Schindler, Axel Springer, Total and Veolia, will be put to the test with the GM HydroGen4 concept. As part of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), a project funded by the German Federal Department for Transport, Building and Urban Development, the goal is to prove the practical suitability of hydrogen in road transport. GM Europe President Carl-Peter Forster stated that "we are delighted that these high profile business partners have joined us as we take zero emission fuel cell technology forward with the HydroGen4 programme." Developed as part of GM’s advanced technology strategy, the fourth generation fuel cell vehicle is the result of over a decade’s worth of hydrogen and fuel cell technology research. The HydroGen4 boasts improved performance, durability and is equipped with a wireless data transfer system that transmits essential validation data, while aiding engineers in understanding the likely ownership and driving experience of users. Using 440 single cells, the HydroGen4 fuel cell stack combines hydrogen and oxygen from the air to create electricity, with water vapour as the only by-product. The electric motor inside delivers an acceleration from 0-62mph in around 12 seconds and has a maximum speed of 100mph. Additionally, the car is fitted with a 1.8 kWh buffer battery to store energy from the vehicle's regenerative braking system and cover peak electrical loads. The three carbon-fibre composite tanks, storing 4.2 kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bars, are able to power the car over a range of 320 kilometres. The GM HydroGen4 is designed to be as secure and dependable as a traditional vehicle, with hydrogen safety features embedded in each system, and can even run in sub-zero temperatures. Maintenance of the vehicles will be conducted by an Opel dealer trained and equipped to handle fuel cell vehicles. With over 435,000 miles driven across the world, the GM HydroGen4 is the perfect example of sustainable mobility with zero emissions.
