GMC Yukon Hybrid

The GMC Yukon Hybrid will arrive at dealerships at the end of next year, boasting the world's first two-mode hybrid propulsion system in an SUV and the potential to offer a 25-percent increase in overall fuel economy. GMC, always known for its engineering excellence, is putting this innovative hybrid technology to work to deliver both power and fuel efficiency while preserving the capabilities of a full-size SUV. John Larson, GMC's general manager, expressed his excitement for the Yukon Hybrid, which "further improves [the company's] segment-leading fuel economy while providing all the performance you expect from GMC." Its aluminum small-block Vortec V-8 engine provides the power for towing up to 6,000 lbs, while GMC has redesigned certain components of the vehicle such as the hood, front, and rear fascias, and grille to optimize its aerodynamics and counteract the added weight of the hybrid propulsion. GM's two-mode hybrid system, co-developed with DaimlerChrysler and BMW Group, provides two modes of operation: the first for low speed and light loads, which can use electric power alone to cut fuel usage in stop-and-go traffic, and the second for highway speeds, which integrates Active Fuel Management, cam phasing, and late-intake valve closure to provide full 8-cylinder performance when needed. This system also uses a 4-speed automatic transmission and electronic controls in an integrated, powerful design that can be employed with gas and diesel engines, front and rear wheel-drive configurations, and any car, truck, or SUV. GMC's Yukon Hybrid aims to reduce fuel usage in the highest fuel-consuming vehicles first. Highlighting their commitment to this cause, the hybrid SUV puts forth a remarkable combination of fuel economy, performance, and towing capacity.
