Holden Astra SRi Turbo 2005 posters

Holden Astra SRi Turbo

The fifth generation AH Astra, based on the T-platform Opel Astra H, was introduced in November 2004 as a five-door hatchback. It was manufactured in Belgium and sold alongside the now Polish-built Astra TS sedan and hatchback, dubbed as the “Astra Classic”. In 2003 and 2004, the Daewoo Lacetti was sold in Australia as a Daewoo before Holden withdrew the brand due to unsustainable sales.

In terms of safety, the AH series Astra proved "better than average" according to the 2008 Used Car Safety Ratings. At launch, front- and side-impact airbags came as standard, allowing the car to receive a four-star ANCAP rating. Higher-end models managed to reach the full five-star score with the inclusion of additional safety equipment.

Holden suspended the importation of the Astra on 20 April 2009, and instead introduced the Holden Cruze as its replacement to the Holden Viva. By 31 August 2009, the company made the cessation of Astra imports permanent with no intention of further imports either of the AH series or its successor.

To focus their small car industry efforts, Holden shifted its attention to the Cruze.

Model year changes

  • MY05: Astra station wagon was released in August 2005.
  • MY06.5: the Astra added as standard head-protecting side curtain airbags and two versions of the diesel engine—a 1.9-litre version with 110 kilowatts (150 hp) and six-speed manual transmission (known as Z19DTH) and a six-speed automatic model with the Z19DT, producing 88 kilowatts (118 hp). In New Zealand, however, the Astra TS had previously been offered with a 1.7-litre turbodiesel.
  • MY07: released in January 2007, it coincided with the launch of the Astra SRi and Twin Top convertible. Both featured the 2.2-litre Z22YH petrol engine producing 110 kilowatts (150 hp) and available with either the six-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
  • MY07.5: April 2007 brought a facelift, with a tweaked front grille, light updates, new 16 inch alloy design for the CDX and CDTi models, and black tinted headlamps for sport variants. The 1.8-litre petrol engine was also upgraded to Z18XER, from 90 kilowatts (120 hp) to 103 kilowatts (138 hp).
  • MY08: the five-door SRi was dropped, leaving the SRi coupé and Twin Top with the 2.2-litre engine.
  • MY08.5: following May 2008, a minor, non-cosmetic update featured electronic stability control (ESC) as standard fitment across the entire lineup. The five-door SRi made a comeback, although it came with the 1.8-litre engine instead of the 2.2-litre petrol engine. This engine change was not reflected in the coupé SRi or the Twin Top. The Astra station wagon also had the diesel engine option, available already on the hatchback, offered with an automatic transmission. This marked the return of the Astra station wagon to the New Zealand market after its discontinuation after the TS series.
  • MY09: the CD and CDX hatchback and station wagon variants reverted to the black bezel projector-style headlamps.
