Holden VZ Monaro 2004 posters

Holden VZ Monaro

The Holden VZ Monaro was first seen as a Commodore Coupé show car at the Sydney Motor Show in 1998. Journalists welcomed the car and dubbed it the Monaro, leading Holden to make it available in production. After only 22 months of development and a small budget of A$60 million, the Monaro was released as the V2 series in 2001. It was offered in two variants, the CV6 and the CV8, with either a supercharged 3.8L V6 or a 5.7L Gen III V8, and 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions. Soon it became known to be one of the fastest stock cars in the world. In early 2003, the Series 2 model was unveiled which had a revised dashboard based on the VY Commodore, a new wheel design, and some new colors. Unfortunately, the CV6 model was not well-received and sales were poor, so it was discontinued when the Series 3 model was produced in 2004. Not long after the Series 1 Monaro was available, Holden Special Vehicles unveiled a 'GTO' version, with 295kW and a 'GTS' version of 300 kW tuned by Callaway. The 'GTS' was eventually dropped, but a four-wheel drive model dubbed the 'Coupe4' took its place. Two special edition CV8-R Monaros were also released, and featured wheels and other features unique to these models. The crème de la crème of the VZ Monaro range was the HRT 427. The car had been taken to a whole new level by Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) and the Holden Racing Team (HRT) with a supercharged 7L C5R Chevrolet racing engine, 420 kW of power and acceleration times of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 4 seconds. It was quicker than the Ferrari 360 Modena and Lamborghini Gallardo. Sadly, due to expensive prizes, the idea to produce the HRT 427 for the road was dropped. But a racecar version of the HRT 427 went on to win the 2002 and 2003 Bathurst 24 hour races and earned Peter Brock his 10th win at Bathurst. Had the HRT 427 road car been built, it surely would have achieved the same status in the automotive & motorsport world as the Falcon GT HO Phase III.
