Honda Accord Coupe

When the 5th generation Honda Accord was released in 1993, two distinct versions were created - one for the European market and one for the North American and Japanese market. These two versions were the result of a joint venture between Honda and the Rover Group. The Rover 600 was released in Europe while the Isuzu Aska was released to the Japanese market as the Honda Accord. Although Isuzu-manufactured vehicles were also sold as Honda products in Japan, the 5th generation North American Accord was too wide to fit into the favorable tax bracket.

At its release, the Accord won the Car of the Year Japan Award for the second time.

North America, Japan and Philippines

The 5th generation North American Accord, based on the 'CD' chassis, was launched on 9 September 1993. It was wider in size than previous models, making it classified as a mid-size car in North America. Unfortunately, this meant that it was also too wide to fit within the favorable Japanese tax bracket, leaving the Honda Ascot and Honda Rafaga to partially take up the role the Accord could have had. Engine-wise, the Accord had a 2.0 litre engine, which pushed it over the specified 2000cc limiting size and caused buyers to have to pay more annual road tax that would have been necessary for a 1.8-litre engine.
