Honda Accord Coupe

For the sixth generation Honda Accord, Honda created three distinct models for the Japanese, North American, and European markets. The North American model wagon was cancelled, as was the coupe in Japan. As further separate performance versions, Honda created the Type R for the European market and the Euro R for the Japanese domestic market. Japan The Japanese models, released in September 1997, were constructed with a sleeker design to fit into the "compact" car segment for tax purposes, with the exception of the Euro R and wagon that were classified as mid-sized. Accompanying the Accord in Japan was the Honda Torneo, replacing the Honda Ascot and Honda Rafaga. The Accord was sold through the dealer locations of Honda Clio, while the Torneo was sold at Honda Verno and Honda Primo. This generation was also the last to include the synonymous Isuzu Aska. The previous model of the Accord, being of greater exterior dimensions, was classified as a midsize car in Japan. The Honda Inspire was produced in two formats for this time, one with the smaller G20A five-cylinder engine and a more compact sedan version to fit into the restrictions of the "compact" segment. This represented Honda's effort to establish Honda Clio as an upscale car dealership, selling luxury sedans such as the Honda Legend and Honda Inspire, similar to the launch of the Acura brand in North America. In Japan, Honda still made the Accord station wagon available. All Japanese Accord trim levels were offered with their new, web-based telematics service, Internavi.
