Honda Accord Sedan

For the sixth generation, Honda split the Accord into three distinct models for the Japanese, North American, and European markets. This generation also featured two performance variants designed for the European and Japanese domestic markets, called the Type R and Euro R, respectively.

Japan

The Japanese models, which were launched on 4 September 1997, were narrower than the previous generation, allowing it to be classified as a compact car for tax purposes, while the Euro R and wagon models were classified as midsize cars. This generation marked the arrival of the Honda Torneo, which replaced the Honda Ascot and Honda Rafaga in Japan and could be purchased from either Honda Verno or Honda Primo dealers, while the Accord stayed at Honda Clio dealers. Additionally, the second generation Honda Inspire was produced in two forms, one for the smaller G20A five-cylinder engine and another that fit into the compact regulations. This marketing move was Honda's way of establishing Honda Clio as a luxury car dealership, selling the Honda Legend and Honda Inspire like Acura does in North America. Additionally, Honda kept the Accord station wagon up for sale in Japan. All models sold in Japan came with Honda's new telematics service, Internavi.
