Honda Civic CRX Si

The Honda CR-X, originally named as the Honda Ballade Sports CR-X in Japan, was acompact sports car produced by Honda. The first generation CR-X was marketed outside Japan as the Honda Civic CR-X. The acronym "CR-X" stands for "Civic Renaissance model X". In 1983, the CR-X was launched for the 1984 model year as an economy hatchback with capacity for two passengers. However, European markets received an upgraded ZC 130 hp engine and four seats. The Honda Civic CR-X was redesigned in 1987 till 1992 and became popular for its performance, particularly its US performance model, the Si, together with its nimble handling and excellent fuel economy. The original 1.3 liters car and the later American-market CR-X HF model could provide more than 50 mpg that preceded gas-electric hybrids. One of the rare options for the CR-X was the "Cyber Glass" roof. The Japanese Si and European 16v models came with a 1.6 L dual overhead camshaft engine that delivered 128 bhp, while the Si engine was deemed ZC and the 16v stamped D16A9. In 1990, Honda refreshed the looks of the car when it added the B16A VTEC engine to the lineup. This engine used Variable Valve Timing and Lift for high rev power and lower fuel consumption and idleing at low RPMs. This B16A engine produced 150 bhp in the European VT model and 160 bhp in the JDM SiR model. In 1992, Honda replaced the CR-X with a new, Targa-topped, Civic-based model, the Honda Civic Del Sol, also known as Honda Del Sol. The Del Sol was referred to as the "3rd Generation CR-X" by admirers, despite its contrasting look and feel. In the US, the Del-Sol came in S, Si, and VTEC models; the latter with a 160hp DOHC engine. Production of the Del Sol ended in 1997, signaling the retirement of the CR-X. Despite the numerous rumors abroad, there has yet to be a CR-X comeback. Recently, Autoweek reported that Honda slated a revival of the CR-X for 2007; however, no official announcement has been made by Honda. The Civic CR-X was Motor Trends Import Car of the Year for 1984; moreover, it secured its place in Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1985 and 1988. The CR-X Si was also Motor Trends Import Car of the Year for 1988.
