The Honda Civic del Sol is a two-seat front-engined, front-wheel-drive, targa-top car manufactured by Honda in the 1990s. This car is based on the Honda Civic platform and was the successor of the widely appreciated Honda CR-X. It was introduced for the first time in 1992 in Japan and the United Kingdom, and in 1993 in the United States.
The Spanish name del Sol means "of the sun" or "from the sun", which refers to its removable hardtop that stows in the trunk and a retractable rear window to give a convertible feeling. This, however, reduces the trunk capacity from 9.5 cubic feet to 6.5 cubic feet. Furthermore, in many markets, the name CR-X was dropped from the del Sol line.
From 1995 models, Honda got rid of the Civic name from the del Sol in the Americas. And in Europe, the tag del Sol was removed in 1995, while the car was now known as the new CR-X. Honda ended the production and sales of the del Sol in 1997 in the U.S. and 1998 elsewhere, with about 75,000 cars sold in America.
Specification
The Honda Civic del Sol was available in two trim levels - S and SI. The S model has a 1.5-liter SOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine and 13" steel wheels. In Japan, the model is known as the VXi/VGi and comes with a Honda D15B-VTEC engine producing 128 bhp (95 kW; 130 PS). The uplevel model is the "Si", known as the ESi in Europe, under which there is a 1.6-liter SOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Honda's VTEC. This model further has 14" alloy wheels, power side mirrors, cruise control, rear disc brakes, wider tires, and additional anti-sway bars for improved handling.
Other options available on all the models are: rear spoiler, custom floor mats, power steering, heated mirrors, traction control system, limited slip differential, and air conditioning. A special option for Japan and Europe is the TransTop, an electric mechanism that retracts the targa top into the trunk with a press of a button.
