Honda Civic Hatchback

In 1987, the Honda Civic experienced a major revamp for the 1988 model year. It came with a unique double-wishbone suspension system on all four wheels, a longer wheelbase of 98.4 inches (250 cm) and a redesigned body with a lower hood line and enhanced glass for lesser drag. The rear suspension system is more accurately described as multi-link trailing arm suspension, since the upper control arm has a single anchor and the main trailing arm features toe control.

Japan

The fourth generation Civic base model had a 1.2 liter SOHC single carbureted engine, however, this engine was only available for the Japanese and American markets. Instead, the Japanese version of the base model was fitted with a 1.3 liter SOHC single carbureted engine and labeled as the 23L or 23U.

Several other engine models were available in the Japanese-market 25X and 25XT, namely a 1.5 L SOHC engine which came with dual-point injection, single carburetor and dual carburetor versions. The Japanese version of the sports trim Si had a ZC D16A8/A9 1.6 L 16V DOHC engine.

The top model of the hatchback in late 1989 was the SiR which featured a 1.6-litre, 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 7,600 rpm "B16A" DOHC VTEC engine, boasting Honda's Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control technology (VTEC). VTEC allowed two different camshaft profiles- one for fuel economy and another for performance - thus setting a precedent for future high-revving, naturally aspirated performance variants of the Honda Civic. This model proved to be quite popular around the world, notably receiving the "Golden Steering Wheel Award" from the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, and it came first in France’s l’Automobile magazine 1989 survey on car quality and reliability. The European model of the SiR was the 1.6i-VT which had a B16A1 engine which revved up to 8,200 rpm and had 150 hp (112 kW), along with 111 lbf·ft (150 N·m) of torque like the Japanese market B16. Automatic-equipped SiR Civics in Japan also had the lower-powered engine.
