Honda Civic Hatchback

In 1987, Honda introduced a significantly redesigned Civic for the 1988 model year. This update featured a new "double-wishbone suspension" on all four corners and an increased wheelbase of 98.4 inches (250 cm), along with a lower hood line and more glass for less drag. The rear suspension employed a multi-link trailing arm design, with a single anchor for the upper control arm and toe control used on the main trailing arm. The base version of the fourth-generation Civic for the Japanese and American markets featured a 1.2-liter SOHC single carbureted engine, while a 1.3-liter SOHC single carbureted engine was standard in the Japanese model. A 1.5-liter SOHC engine was made available in Japan in two versions; the 25X and 25XT, as either dual-point injection, single carbureted or dual carbureted. The Japanese version of the Civic Si had a ZC D16A8/A9 1.6-liter 16V DOHC engine, producing 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 7,600 rpm. In late 1989, the SiR hatchback model was released featuring the first B engine, a 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine capable of producing 111 lbf·ft (150 N·m) of torque. This engine marked the introduction of Honda's variable valve timing and electronic lift control technology, or VTEC. The European version of the SiR was badged as "1.6i-VT," producing 150 hp (112 kW) at 8,200rpm. Japanese automatic-equipped SiR Civics were equipped with the lower-powered engine. The Civic Hatchback was well-received worldwide, receiving a "Golden Steering Wheel Award" from German newspaper Bild am Sonntag and being ranked first in l'Automobile magazine's 1989 survey on car quality and reliability.
