Honda Civic Si

The seventh generation of the Honda Civic was released in September 2000 as a 2001 model. It retained similar exterior dimensions compared to the previous Civic, however, the interior space was increased significantly which enabled it to bump up to the compact class size segment. There was a level rear floor which provided for greater comfort for back seat passengers. This model abandoned the front double wishbone suspension that had been used in the fourth to sixth generations and instead opted for a MacPherson strut. Upon its introduction in 2000, it won the Car of the Year Japan Award for a record fourth time, and the Japan Automotive Researchers' and Journalists' Conference Car of the Year award a year later. All engine variants were upgraded to 115 horsepower (86 kW), a 9 horsepower (7 kW) improvement compared to the previous model, while the EX power remained at 127 horsepower (95 kW). All non-Si engines were also stroked to 1.7 liters for the North American market. In 2003, new illuminating tail lights which created a circular effect when turned on were added. The exterior of the Civic was given a facelift during 2004 with new headlights, bumper, and grille; side skirts were also added in that year. In 2005, the U.S Honda introduced the Special Edition available in LX or EX. The first hybrid version of the seventh generation of the Civic was released in North America in spring 2002. It featured a 1.3 L I4 main gasoline engine and auxiliary electric motors, with combined output rated at 93 horsepower. The electric motors were powered by a battery array charged by the regenerative braking during deceleration. This helped reduce exhaust emissions and increased the fuel mileage to 46 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway when using the manual transmission according to EPA estimates.
