Honda FCX Concept

The Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recently held a demonstration drive of a next-generation fuel cell vehicle, the FCX Concept. It features a newly developed, compact and highly efficient Honda FC Stack, as well as a low-floor, low-riding and short-nose body. This allows for a spacious interior combined with futuristic styling and improved performance while being more environmentally friendly. In 2008, limited marketing of the totally new vehicle based on this concept model will begin in Japan and the US. The FCX Concept is equipped with the V Flow1 fuel cell platform, which has a high-efficiency fuel cell stack arranged in a center-tunnel layout. This creates an elegant, low-riding form, which is more difficult to achieve in conventional fuel cell vehicles. The stack is 20% smaller and 30% lighter than the current FCX stack, yet its power output has increased by 14 kW. Additionally, the drive motor has been positioned coaxially with the gearbox for a more compact design, with increased output of 15 kW. As a result, the power plant is 40% smaller in volume and 180 kg lighter than the current FCX, resulting in improved efficiency and performance. The FCX Concept also features a vertical-flow design, which utilizes gravity to discharge the water produced during electricity generation, for more efficient performance. This then creates a more stable power generation under varying conditions, and higher output from a smaller package. The improved design also allows for cold-weather starts at temperatures as low as minus 30oC.
