Honda Odyssey 1995 posters

Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey is a vehicle manufactured by Honda, primarily as a minivan for the North American market. The Odyssey was the first minivan to feature a flat-folding third row seat.

First generation (1995-1998)

The first generation Odyssey was based on the Accord platform, and powered by a 4-cylinder engine. Despite an engine size increase in 1998, critics deemed it too small for a minivan, and its engine underpowered, and a Consumer Reports comparison to the Dodge Caravan favored the latter. The first generation Odyssey came in two trim levels, LX and EX.

The Odyssey was rebadged as the Isuzu Oasis, continuing to serve as a taxi cab in New York City, and also won Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 1995.

Second generation (1999-2004)

The American Odyssey was sold under the name Honda Lagreat in Japan. It adopted the size and layout of the Dodge Caravan, making it larger and more powerful, but with transmission technology failing to keep pace, leaving it vulnerable to reliability issues. Common issues included failure of the transmissions's third clutch pack, blockage of internal transmission fluid flow, road noise, rattles, expensive power door failures, and sticking door seals. The oil jet recall for the 5-speed automatic transmission of some models failed to address the main cause of breakdown.
