Honda Passport 2000 posters

Honda Passport

The Honda Passport was Honda's first entry into the truck market in the United States. Manufactured by Isuzu and released in 1993, it was marketed as a "quick fix" SUV wagon version of the Isuzu pickup truck. It gained popularity in regions of the US like the Pacific Northwest due to its comparability with competitors such as the Nissan Pathfinder. The Honda Passport was nicely appointed, but reviews criticized its design as other crossover SUVs such as the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee became more popular. The 1990s saw a partnership form between Isuzu and Honda, where Isuzu provided Honda with SUVs such as the Passport and Trooper (sold as the Acura SLX) while Honda provided vehicles for Isuzu, like the Isuzu Gemini and Oasis (Honda Civic and Odyssey respectively). The Honda version of the Passport ended production after 2002, when Honda released the mid-size Pilot and the compact Element crossover SUVs instead. This loss in market share was a major factor in Isuzu discontinuing not only the Rodeo, but also the Axiom and sales of all their passenger vehicles in the US. Additionally, Honda dealers today exclude the Passport (and hybrid Insight) from guaranteed trade-in value promotions, further showing that buyers recognize the vehicle as a rebadged Isuzu.
