Honda Pilot LX

The Honda Pilot LX is Honda's second successfully designed and built SUV. It is manufactured in both Alliston, Ontario, Canada, and Lincoln, Alabama. Before the Pilot, Honda's SUV offering mainly consisted of the Passport, which was a modified Isuzu Rodeo, and the compact CR-V, which was based on the Civic chassis. Both of these predecessors lacked the features and size that many American SUV buyers desired, such as size, passenger and cargo space, and towing capacity. The Pilot was designed to fill those needs, with an emphasis placed on light off-roading capabilities. Since its release, the Pilot has been instrumental to the success of Honda, selling over 100,000 in 2004, representing a 20% increase from the previous year. This model is sold in North America, with the Honda MDX variant released in Japan and Australia. In the Middle East, the equivalent model is the Honda MR-V. The Pilot LX is powered by a 3.5 liter SOHC 24-valve VTEC V6 engine featuring aluminum alloy construction and 240 hp. This was increased to 255 hp with a DBW throttle system for the 2005 model. It has a five-speed automatic transmission and, as tested, accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds and covers a ΒΌ-mile sprint in 15.9 seconds. This model is rated for a towing capacity of 4,500 pounds for boats and 3,500 pounds for trailers, and has gas mileage ratings of 17 city/22 highway. This 8-passenger vehicle has stadium seating, optional powered moonroof, DVD entertainment system, and navigation system, in addition to standard flat-folding rear seats. The Pilot LX also has a four-wheel drive system called Variable Torque Management 4WD (VTM-4) which delivers power to all four wheels, with a dashboard activation to lock both rear half-shafts. Utilizing a coil spring and multi-link arrangement at the rear, the Pilot LX has a wide track of 66.3 inches at the front and 66.5 inches at the rear. The safety features include VTM-4, ABS-equipped four-wheel disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel independent suspension, and notably 282 degrees of outward visibility. Finally, its foundation consists of structural rigidity, integrated energy-absorbing crush zones, and progressive deformation in front, side, and rear collisions.
