Honda Prelude Si

The Honda Prelude was a front wheel drive I4-engined coupe developed by Honda that was produced from 1978 to 2001. Over these years, the Prelude went through five generations, before it was discontinued once the fourth-generation Honda Integra was launched in Japan in late 2001. The Prelude's main competitors in the market were Toyota Celica and Nissan Silvia, Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi FTO, Mitsubishi Cordia (later the Eclipse) and Mazda MX-6.

1978

The first generation Prelude debuted in 1978 and was the third new model offered by Honda, after the Civic and Accord. Emulating the styling of both these models, the Prelude was fitted with a 1751cc SOHC CVCC I4 engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that gave a power output of 72 hp and 94lb-ft of torque, with the optional 2-speed Hondamatic offering 68 hp.

1983

The second generation Prelude was released in 1983 and initially featured an 1.8-litre 12-valve carburetor engine that gave out 100 hp, while fuel injection was made available in 1985 in the "Si" models. International markets had access to a 2-litre DOHC 16-valve PGM-FI engine in 1986, and this required a modified hood as the engine could not fit under the stock version. The second generation Prelude was also the first model to have pop-up headlights, to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. Other tweaks made to the exterior included color-matched front and rear bumpers and revised taillights. With a lightweight body of 1,025 kg and a resulting power of 137 hp from the 16-valve engine, the car was remarkably agile compared to its competitors.
