Honda Prelude Si

The Honda Prelude, a popular front wheel drive I4-engined coupe, was produced by the Honda Company between 1978 and 2001, across five generations. It was eventually discontinued upon the fourth-generation Honda Integra's release in Japan in late 2001 due to declining sales figures. The Toyota Celica has consistently been the Prelude's main competitor, a similarly equipped I4-powered coupe that had been released a while prior. Throughout the 1980s, other models emerged to challenge the Prelude, such as the Nissan Silvia, Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi FTO, Mitsubishi Cordia (later the Eclipse), and Mazda MX-6. The first generation Prelude debuted in 1978 and was placed between the Civic and the Accord models in Honda's lineup. It was armed with a 1751cc SOHC CVCC I4 engine that produced 72 hp and 94 lbf-ft of torque with a 5-speed manual transmission, and 68 hp with a 2-speed Hondamatic. The second generation, released in 1983, initially came with a 1.8-litre 12-valve carburated engine making 100 hp and fuel injection was later added to the "Si" models. The engine was then upgraded to a 2-litre DOHC 16-valve PGM-FI engine in Japan, Asia and Europe; however, this only became released in Europe during 1986. For this generation, Honda included the signature pop-up headlights allowing for improved aerodynamics by reducing drag. To fit the larger engine, the hood was slightly modified. Later, European versions had slight alterations to the taillights and revised front and rear bumpers with color-matching. With a lightweight of 1,025 kg, the 2-litre 16-valve DOHC engine produced 137 hp offering it surprising nimbleness when compared to competitors - an attribute that was not often seen until the VTEC engines emerged.
