Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra debuted a brand new model (XD) in 2001, replacing the wagon with a five-door hatchback. All U.S. models were equipped with standard front and front side airbags, air conditioning, power locks, power windows, and power steering—reducing the need for dealer stocks, repairs, and seeking to boost Hyundai's value-oriented reputation. The GT trim was available in hatchback 2001 onward, with an upgraded suspension, leather seats, fog lights, alloy wheels, lip spoiler, and blue-lit instrument cluster. Optional features included an automatic transmission, power moonroof, and anti-lock brakes with traction control. The GT sedan was also offered in 2003 and 2004. The Elantra offers either 1.6 or 2.0L gasoline motors, or a 2.0L turbo diesel. North American models are only sold with the 2.0L engine. Despite its small size, the EPA-classified the Elantra as a midsize car due to its spacious interior. The four-cylinder engine has a good balance of power and efficiency. With its 10-year warranty, fuel economy ratings have risen from an EPA 24/33 to 27/34 with a manual transmission, and 2-3mpg lower with an automatic, while the horsepower has increased from 135hp to 138hp thanks to the addition of CVVT in 2004. Initially, the horsepower was inaccurately listed as 140hp.
