Hyundai Equus

In 1999, Hyundai Motors and Mitsubishi Motors unveiled their full-size sedan - the Hyundai Equus, designed to give Mercedes-Benz and BMW some competition in the Korean market. The four-door car proved to be a success for Hyundai in South Korea, however, only a few of these vehicles were exported internationally. The first generation Equus was developed together with Mitsubishi Motors, who released this very same model as the Dignity in Japan. It was 5.1 metres (200.8 in) long, 1.9 metres (74.8 in) wide, and had a front wheel drive layout. A long-wheelbase limousine version was offered exclusively for the Korean domestic market, costing 92,510,000 South Korean won for its 2008 model equipped with the 4.5 8A80 (Omega) V8 engine. The Equus and Dignity also shared the same powertrain options, namely a 3.0 Sigma, 3.5 Sigma, and 4.5 8A80 (Omega) V8 motor. In Japan, 2,000 units of the Mitsubishi Dignity (limousine) and Mitsubishi Proudia (sedan) were sold. The 4.5 8A80 (Omega) V8 engine had a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) system, engineered and developed by Mitsubishi Motors. This was optimised to use premium unleaded gasoline, which was scarce in South Korea. As a result, most of the engines ran on normal unleaded gasoline fuel, leading to performance issues that drivers reported. Hyundai Motors then modified the engine to a MPI (Multi Point Injection) type to circumvent these issues.
