Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
At the 2010 New York Auto Show, Hyundai introduced the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, the first vehicle in the industry to feature gasoline direct-injection (GDI), twin-scroll turbochargers, and full-hybrid powertrains. Boasting Hyundai’s proprietary Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, this full parallel hybrid is equipped with lithium polymer batteries as well as a highly efficient, compact 6-speed transmission, modified with a hybrid starter-generator, electric motor, and low-friction oil pump.
John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, is impressed with this “new kid on the block.” He notes its “unique design sets it apart from the mid-size hybrid pack,” as well as its “significant efficiency advantages at higher speeds” when compared to competitors’ power split technology. Joining the already available GDI-equipped Sonata, the Sonata 2.0T, and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will be in Hyundai showrooms by late 2010.
