The Jaguar XJ Mk 2 was first unveiled in 1986 and had undergone multiple revisions since then, yet it was still falling behind its competition. Even though most of its rivals were two generations ahead, the long-standing XJ design elements were unable to keep up. To compete with the modern market, Jaguar re-engineered their XJ model with the return of the beloved XJ6. The X350 was released in September 2002 featuring traditional exterior and interior styling with modern engineering and construction.
Design and engineering
The X350 was made with an aluminium monocoque/chassis built with aerospace-grade epoxy adhesives and self-piercing rivets, instead of the steel body with spot-welds found in similar vehicles. This allowed the XJ to weigh about the same as a modern Mini, whereas a steel body of the same car would be heavier by 40%. Also, Jaguar's construction method is different but still advanced compared to that of the Audi A8.
