Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas

When the third generation of the XJ (X350) debuted in showrooms in September 2002, it was clear that Jaguar had outdone itself in design and engineering. Not only was the X350 styled with the classic Jaguar look, but it had been completely re-engineered in comparison with the earlier Mk 2 XJ. Additionally, the X350 marked the return of the XJ6 badge and the V6-cylinder engine that came with it.

Design and engineering

The X350's chassis and body are crafted from aluminium and only some steel components, which make the XJ's bodyshell weigh around the same as a modern Mini. In order to create the XJ's unibody, epoxy adhesives are used to bond underbody components together and around 3,200 self-piercing rivets. This method of construction is different to the one Audi utilizes for the A8, yet both are seen as advanced.

In contrast to the contemporary X350, the Mk 2 XJ had not been significantly revised since 1986, causing it to lose ground to its much-modernized rivals. After its release the same year, BMW had launched the Mk 3 (E38) and Mk 4 (E65) versions of its 7 Series in 1994 and 2001, respectively, while Jaguar remained with the Mk 2 XJ.
