Jaguar XType 3.0

The Jaguar X-TYPE is an entry-level luxury car/compact executive car released by the British automaker Jaguar Cars in 2002. It uses a modified version of the Ford CD132 platform, a British alteration of the Ford CDW27 platform, which is the basis for the Ford Mondeo. Production of the X-TYPE is currently ongoing at Jaguar's Halewood facility in England. At the time of its release, it was the smallest of the saloon (sedan) cars offered by Jaguar, thus designed to garner the same success as the S-Type. Its styling takes many cues from the XJ series. Of the parts used to make the X-TYPE, 10% are Jaguar-made, 20% are Ford-made, and the remaining 70% are made by subcontractors. Designed to be a direct competitor to the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, sales have been slow (especially overseas) due to its similarity to the older XJ which is usually taken by much older Jaguar enthusiasts, not the younger customers that Jaguar desired. In the year of its release, it was expected to sell more than one hundred thousand. Instead, its peak sales was at fifty thousand in 2003. It especially tanked in the United States, its primary market, from 21,542 in 2004 to 10,941 in 2005. BMW meanwhile sold 106,950 3 Series cars in the US in the same year and Mercedes-Benz sold 60,658 C-Class cars with Audi selling 48,922 A4 and S4 models. Even Lexus' IS 300 received a more lessening reaction by the public as well. Despite its poor performance, it still holds the title as Jaguar's best-selling model, accounting for 36% of overall sales. In the US, the X-TYPE is equipped either with a 192 hp (143 kW) 2.5 L or a 227 hp (169 kW) 3.0 L Jaguar AJ-V6 engine and all-wheel drive. The 2.0 L front wheel drive option is also available. European purchasers have the choice of petrol or diesel-powered engines. A 2.2 L diesel engine was introduced in mid-2005. At the start, the X-TYPE was released as a saloon. In early 2004, the estate version was added, making it the second ever Jaguar estate car and first diesel-powered estate car. The estate version garnered a mixed response from the public. In the US, it is sometimes referred to as the Sportwagon.
