Jeep CJ-5 1955 posters

Jeep CJ-5

The Jeep CJ-5 was first introduced by Kaiser in 1955, inspired by the M-38A1 Jeep used in the Korean War. Being slightly larger than its predecessor, the CJ-3B, the CJ-5 featured a longer wheelbase and overall length, as well as improved engines, axles, transmissions and increased seating comfort. It had softer styling lines and rounded body contours, alongside the introduction of a long-wheelbase model, the CJ-6, which was similar to the CJ-5 but featured a longer wheelbase. In 1956, Jeep also introduced a forward-control cab-over-engine variant to the CJ lineup. With a production run lasting from 1954 to 1984, the Jeep CJ-5 remains the longest running Jeep vehicle produced. During the 16 years of Kaiser ownership, Jeep was able to expand its operations, setting up plants in 30 countries, and selling vehicles in more than 150 markets, making it a highly successful vehicle. In 1965, the Dauntless V-6 engine, with 155 horsepower, was made available as an optional engine for both the 81-inch wheelbase CJ-5 and the 101-inch wheelbase CJ-6, doubling the horsepower of the standard four-cylinder engine. This was the first time the Jeep CJ could be equipped with a V-6 engine.
