Jeep Comanche

The Jeep Comanche (designated MJ) was a pickup truck variant of the Cherokee compact SUV produced from 1986 to 1992. Both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models were offered, boasting cargo box lengths of six or seven feet. The vehicle was designed as a unibody structure, similar to the Volkswagen Rabbit pickup and Dodge Rampage, incorporating many of the styling and suspension elements of the 1984 Cherokee model. Unique Structure Jeep engineers designed a special subframe to attach to the modified Monocoque (unibody) frame of the Cherokee, designed to carry cargo. Subframes designed with two sizes were created, one for the long-bed and one for the short-bed, arriving for 1987. Suspension The Jeep Comanche employed front suspension with coil springs and upper and lower control arms, marking its introduction as the first Jeep to utilize the "Quadra-Link" suspension technology. A trackbar was included to maintain axle centering under the truck. As time passed, later Jeep models used modified versions of the same suspension style. At the rear, leaf springs were found, with longer versions included on the Comanche for more load-bearing capability. An optional "Big Ton" package (known as the "Metric Ton" package outside the U.S.) offered an upgraded rear axle, larger tires, and vast payday improvements over vehicles of a similar size.
