The Jeep Grand Cherokee - a luxurious four wheel drive car from America - is now available in the UK. This power-packed and well-equipped vehicle is priced competitively at £28,995 and has an insurance group rating of only 16p. Jeep Grand Cherokees are factory-built in right hand drive at a production facility in Graz, Austria, and dealers have already taken almost 1,000 orders before launch. It is estimated that the model will have sold at least 3,000 units in its first year in the UK.
This car offers a great range of features as standard: a 174 bhp 4.0-litre six cylinder petrol engine, permanent four wheel drive, speed proportional power steering, coil sprung suspension, anti-lock brakes, driver and passenger airbags, air conditioning, central door locking, cruise control, electrically operated windows and door mirrors, limited slip differential and electrically adjustable and heated front seats with memory setting on the driver's side. It also has a correct Thatcham Category One alarm/immobiliser. The only extras available to order are a sunroof (£645) and a CD auto changer (£492 including labour). An even more powerful V8 Grand Cherokee 5.2 Limited is also available, though only in left hand drive form, at £29,995.
The success of the Jeep range is clear, with 5,883 vehicles sold in 1995 - an 18 per cent increase from that of the year before. Over 15,000 Jeep models have been sold in the UK since the launch of the Cherokee, and with the Grand Cherokee offering extra luxury, increased space and fantastic value for money, it is sure to make a big dent in the off-road and luxury car markets.
