Jeep Jeepster

Willys developed the Jeepster to fill the gap in their product lineup and to crossover into the passenger automobile market. Their "Go Devil" engine, a 134 CID (2.2 L) straight-4, was used in the original VJ Jeepster, producing 62 hp (53 kW). This vehicle was only available with rear-wheel drive, a 3-speed manual transmission with optional overdrive, and drum brakes all around. The distinctive boxy styling was created by industrial designer Brooks Stevens, however the market segment was not as receptive as Willys had originally hoped. In total, 19,132 original Jeepsters were produced during 1948 - 1950. From 1949 - 1950, two additional engines became available in the Jeepster: the L148 Lightning I6 and the L161 Lightning I6. Additionally, the addition of the F134 Hurricane I4 engine to the line of engines used in the 1950 models. All of these were still accompanied by the same rear wheel drive, 3-speed manual transmission, and drum brakes.
