Jeep Willys Quad

The Jeep Willys Quad was the sought-after vehicle in the competition between American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company, Willys-Overland, and Ford Motor Company. Delmar G. Roos, Willys-Overland Vice President of Engineering, designed the Quad in record time. Their opponent's prototypes, 4x4 vehicles from Bantam and Ford, were quickly put through testing at Camp Holabird, Maryland in November 1940. Initially, the Army insisted the vehicles had to weigh no more than 1,300lbs - a limit that was soon dismissed, seeing the need for vehicles of greater weight. As a result, they ordered Bantam to produce 1,500 Model 40 BRC vehicles, Ford 1,500 GP Pygmies, and Willys 1,500 Quads. The Quad was declared the victor following the extensive testing and evaluation and became the Jeep® MB with improvements and modifications. Additionally, the Bantams and Ford GPs were given to Britain and Russia as part of the lend-lease program - the GP referred to as the Blitz Buggy.
