Lancia Aurelia B10

The Lancia Aurelia is believed by many to be the prototype of the modern Gran Turismo car. Designed by Vittorio Jano, it first appeared in 1950 and was produced until the summer of 1958. Featuring the first ever production V6 engine, the Aurelia sported a 60-degree design engineered by de Virgilio – a Lancia engineer working under Jano. The powerplant started out as a 1.8 L unit and over time grew to a 2.5 L design. This was an all-alloy pushrod configuration with a single camshaft located between the banks of cylinders. Fuel delivery was sorted out using a single Weber 40 carburettor. At the rear, the Aurelia pioneered a combination transaxle comprised of the gearbox, clutch, differential and inboard-mounted drum brakes. The front suspension was a sliding pillar system while the rear featured semi-trailing arms that were swapped out with a de Dion tube in the fourth series. First series The first versions of the Aurelia were the B10 saloons. They used a 1754 cc version of the V6 producing 56 hp. Later in 1951, the B21 was released and incorporated a much bigger 1991 cc engine with a capacity to output 70 hp. A two-door B20 GT coupé with a Ghia-designed body rolled off the production line as well with the same 1991 cc engine but upgraded to 75 hp. Altogether, Lancia produced 500 first series Aurelia vehicles. Second series The second series brought an elevation to the B20 with the V6 being tweaked to produce 80 hp from the 1991 cc displacement, thanks to a higher compression ratio and altered valves. Upgrades to the brakes and minor styling revisions such as chromed bumpers instead of aluminium were also included. The cabin was fitted with a brand-new dashboard that included two larger gauges. Apart from these, the suspension remained unchanged from the first series. A new B22 sedan was released in 1952, featured twin Webers and a higher lift camshaft and was capable of putting out a total of 90 hp.
