Lancia Beta Spider

The Lancia Beta (Type 828) was a compact executive car produced by the Italian car manufacturer Lancia from 1972 to 1984. It was the first new model introduced by Lancia after it had been taken over by Fiat in 1969. The Beta was available in a variety of body styles, namely 4-door fastback saloon (Beta berlina), 4-door three-box saloon (Beta Trevi), 2-door coupé (Beta Coupé), 2-door targa (Beta Spider), 3-door estate (Beta HPE), and even a mid-engined sports car, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo. Origins When Fiat acquired Lancia in 1969, the company had been without a Technical Director for a year, no successor having been appointed following the death of Antonio Fessia a year earlier. Ing. Sergio Camuffo was tasked with developing a new model, and with the help of other Lancia engineers, was able to get it into production by the end of 1972. The new Beta was designed to retain the quality of existing Lancias, while reducing production costs by using Fiat group technology and parts. The Beta featured a Fiat twin overhead cam straight four engine, a Fiat-Citroën gearbox, and was assembled in relatively large volumes. By doing so, Fiat aimed to manage the high costs of car development and production.
