Lancia Beta HPE

When Fiat acquired Lancia in 1969, they appointed Ing. Sergio Camuffo to develop a new model, the Lancia Beta (Type 828), which was released in 1972. Produced in several body styles, it was the first model launched after the Fiat take-over and a significant step in Fiat's effort to modernise the Lancia brand. Camuffo brought together a team of engineers to create the Beta: Romanini, chassis design; Zaccone Mina, engine development; Gilio and Bencini, testing.

The design of the Beta was focused on minimising development time and production costs, with Fiat's twin overhead cam straight four engine and front wheel drive chosen to cut down production expenses. The gear box was a development of a transmission also being used by Fiat partner Citroën. The Beta design was also much more cost-effective to produce than its predecessor, the Lancia Fulvia, and so was sold at a much higher volume.
