The Lancia Beta (Type 828) was a compact executive car produced by Italian carmaker Lancia from 1972 to 1984. It was the first new model launched by the firm after it had been acquired by Fiat in 1969. Origins When Fiat took over Lancia in 1969, the company had been without a Technical Director for a year due to the death of Antonio Fessia. Nevertheless, Ing. Sergio Camuffo was hired to create the new car model in early 1970. A number of Lancia's engineering staff had left prior to the Fiat takeover, but Camuffo was still capable of forming a group of engineers to get the Beta into production before the end of 1972. Romanini was in charge of chassis design, Zaccone Mina of engine development, and Gilio and Bencini tested the car. This was a challenging scenario since the project had a tight timeline and limited resources. Thus, the decision was made to use an existing engine: the Fiat twin overhead cam straight four engine. The Lancia Beta was made in several body styles, ranging from a four-door fastback saloon (Beta berlina), four-door three-box saloon (Beta Trevi), two-door coupe (Beta Coupé), two-door targa (Beta Spider), and three- door estate (Beta HPE); a mid-engined sports car was also sold under the Beta name, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo. Gianni Agnelli, Fiat's chief, said that Lancia's output would be 40,000 units in 1972, despite the fact that 100,000 units was needed to cover the costs of developing and producing the cars. This exposed Lancia's lack of profitability, which was also caused by the overly expensive Lancia Fulvia, which had been developed without need for cost-effectiveness. The Beta design was made to retain the quality image - and resulting price premium - of former Lancias, whilst using in-house Fiat group technology and parts whilst minimizing time and costs of production. The project featured a well-regarded Fiat engine, positioned transversely, and a transmission unit developed by the Fiat-Citroën partnership. Furthermore, the design aimed to manufacture the car in higher volumes than the predecessor Lancia saloons.
