Lancia Delta 1.6 HF Turbo

The Lancia Delta was a successful small family car manufactured from 1979 to 1994 by Lancia. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and sold in Sweden as the Saab 600. Thanks to help from Saab, the Delta was designed to be more suitable to colder climates and had a better rust protection than other Lancias. It had the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra/Opel Kadett and Ford Escort as its key competitors. When it was first introduced in Europe, the Delta stood out due to its modern design compared to that of its rivals. The Delta HF 4WD was the most famous model due to its 4WD system and powerful turbo engine. It achieved tremendous success on the rally stage, winning the Constructors Championship six times in a row from 1987 to 1992 and notching 46 WRC wins overall. A separate race model, the Lancia Delta S4, was designed specifically for rallying – though it featured the same name and outward appearance, it was constructed differently and had vastly superior performance. The HF 4WD replaced the HF Turbo as the top-tier model, inheriting its excellent handling from the HF Turbo. In 1985, FISA cancelled plans for a proposed Group S as well as Group B, and Lancia were one of the few prepared for the move thanks to their HF 4WD model. Additionally, the Delta was voted Car of the Year in 1980.
