Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B

The Lancia Delta S4 was a Group B rally car that made waves in the World Rally Championship (WRC) from 1985 to 1986 before the FIA banned Group B cars from competition. It featured a mid-mounted engine, as well as an all-wheel-drive system to maximize traction and handling. Its 1759cc four-cylinder engine was unique in that it combined supercharging and turbocharging to reduce turbo lag and generate a remarkable 550 horsepower (410 kW). However, the Lancia Delta S4 bore little resemblance to the front-engine Delta produced for civilian use and shared no major construction components. In 1987, the Lancia ECV Group S was intended to replace the Delta S4, though it was never given the chance to prove itself - the Group B and Group S categories were abolished. By the end of the 1986 WRC season, the Delta S4 had already earned an impressive three victories with Henri Toivonen (RAC Rally 1985), Massimo Biasion (Argentinian Rally), and Markku Alen (Olympus Rally), as well as helped Alen to a second-place finish in the drivers' championship. Unfortunately, Alen's potential championship title was lost when the FIA annulled the results of the San Remo Rally. Tragically, the Delta S4 was also closely associated with Toivonen's fatal crash during the final Group B rally run in 1986 Corsica.
