Lancia Rally 037 Gruppo B

The Lancia Rally 037 Gruppo B (also known as the Lancia Abarth 037) is a mid-engine race car designed by the Italian firm Lancia for the FIA Group B World Rally Championship in the early 1980s. By the time of its release, the supercharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produced roughly 250bhp, while the upgraded 2.1-litre Evolution version released in 1984 managed a more impressive 325bhp. It was loosely based on the Lancia Monte Carlo (marketed as Scorpion in North America). The ‘037’ in its name is derived from the project number of Abarth, the Fiat Group car manufacturer, that worked on the car. Despite not having four-wheel drive, which hindered it on gravel events, the Lancia Rally 037 Gruppo B allowed Lancia to capture the World Championship in 1983 - fuelled by the efforts of driver Walter Röhrl. The 037's final WRC result was third place at the Safari Rally of 1986 with racer Markku Alen at the wheel.
