Lancia Ypsilon 1.3 Multijet
The Lancia Ypsilon (Type 843) was introduced in 2003 to expand the Lancia range and suit the needs of a younger crowd. Quickly becoming popular, especially with female drivers, it became the best-selling car of the Lancia lineup, with annual production of around 60,000 units. Initially assembled at the Fiat factory in Melfi, in June 2005 the production process was transferred to the Termini Imerese Plant in Sicily. It sports a compact three-door body of 3.78 metres in length, inspired by the Lancia Ardea.
The front fascia of the Ypsilon features a large chrome grille with contours at the top, while the lighting elements are placed at the ends. The bumpers have protective layers applied to the fascia, and fog lights (on select versions) mounted above the air intakes. Going along the side, the car has a pronounced rib running between the glazing frames, which are chrome-plated on select versions. The rear is equipped with vertically oriented headlamps which culminate into the bumper and are integrated with the fenders, containing a small-sized tailgate.
Underneath the Ypsilon is a slightly shortened version of the B-platform, debuting with the Fiat Punto (188) and also found on the Fiat Idea and Lancia Musa. It houses a front-mounted transverse engine along with front-wheel drive. The car contains independent suspension with MacPherson struts with steel arms and a semi-independent torsion beam suspension at the rear. The standard versions use ventilated front discs and rear drum brakes, while the Sport MomoDesign has four-disc brakes with stiffer suspension and fittings. All models come with anti-wheel drive lock (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and a progressive electric power steering system as standard, however, an electronic stability control and traction control are available as optional extras.
