Land Rover Discovery 3
The third generation of the Land Rover Discovery, now known as the LR3 in North America, was introduced in April 2004 for the 2005 model year. This model was an entirely new design, with no parts sharing between the Discovery 2 and 3. Its styling is still distinctively Land Rover, with a stepped roofline and steeply-raked windscreen, but with its modern features the LR3 was kept up to date with the competition.
This model replaced the aging Discovery II, which had not seen many major changes since its launch in 1989. Many of its key components, including the chassis, coil-spring suspension and beam axle layout, dated back to the original Range Rover from 1970. As the Discovery II began to lose sales to the sophisticated Japanese and European 4x4s, the Discovery 3 was brought in to bridge the gap and make the range more competitive.
The Discovery 3 is a comfortable 4x4 (or SUV in American-English) that sits in the middle of Land Rover's lineup, being less expensive than the flagship Range Rover model, but more advanced than the utilitarian Defender. It strikes a good balance between luxury and off-road capability, offering great comfort and reliable performance in any terrain.
