The Land Rover Freelander was developed in the late 1980s to enter the compact SUV market segment. After market research by the Rover Group, the project was codenamed CB40 and initially developed at Canley Building 40. The Rover Group sought to partner with Honda on the CB40, however Honda chose to develop its own CR-V model which was launched in 1997. Subsequently, Rover chose to go ahead with the Freelander using existing parts and components, a strategy which had been successfully implemented on the MGF roadster. When BMW acquired the Rover Group in 1994, the Freelander project was finally awarded the capital it needed to proceed. At one point, there were rumors of a partnership between Land Rover and Hyundai in the early development stages of the Freelander, however the design of the Freelander was ultimately led by Gerry McGovern, the head of design at Land Rover by 2007. Initially, the manufacture of the Freelander was to be subcontracted to Valmet in Finland, however production facilities were subsequently set up in Solihull, making use of the old Rover SD1 assembly hall which had been mothballed in the early 1980s. The Freelander was launched in October 1997 and subsequently became Europe's best-selling four-wheel drive model until 2002. The last Freelanders in North America were sold in 2005. It was available in a variety of models, based around five-door estate and three-door softback (semi-convertible), hardback, and commercial (van-like) versions. In 2004, the Freelander was improved and upgraded, featuring a redesigned exteriors and interiors.
